Deep water ling cod is only open for a limited time. The main challenge with the season, is the fact it falls during some of the most turbulent ocean conditions of the year. Fortunately, we normally have some great windows of opportunity in March when the ocean is safe and the fish are huge and extremely abundant! It’s truly a world class fishery that only a handful of people get to experience. These trips give you a real chance at catching a trophy size ling cod, a fish of a lifetime and not to mention excellent table fair! It’s very common to measure fish well over 40 inches. We fish a couple exclusive spots that are only known by a select few locals, including us! In fact, we fished a spot last year and never spotted another boat the entire season, not even in the distance! We are passionately committed to giving you the absolute best ling cod fishing experience available off the Central Oregon coast! The season closes on April 1st, so if you are interested, now is the time to book your trip for this March(ocean conditions permitting). Come experience real deep sea fishing for huge ling cod!

The bottom fishing has been very good this week. Limits and near limits of rock fish and ling cod for many anglers over the past few days. Crabbing continues to be good. Salmon fishing is “hit and miss”, although many anglers continue to get plenty of action if willing to put forth the effort and time. The Coho season may come to and end after this weekend, as the quota will most likely be met. Chinook fishing has been fair and at times good for those who find the fish. The most successful Chinook anglers have been using downriggers and presenting their baits anywhere from 50 to 100ft. We saw some tuna hit the docks today from a private sport boat. No big numbers, but there are reports of fish still out there. Earlier this week, one of our friends reported seeing LOTS of fish, but had some difficulty getting them to bite on the troll. The last confirmed tuna location was around 46 miles and towards “the four corners”.

Well, there’s a little bit of everything going on right now. The summer season is in the fourth quarter and bottom fish, tuna, salmon, and crab are the target species right now. Halibut is over and Cabezon is closed. Here’s a brief synopsis of the current fishing report for Depoe Bay and Newport, OR.

Tuna: The fish are out there between 27 and 40+ miles. Most of the action is occurring a little north around the 45 line, and there seems to be tons of fish still swimming around. On any given day the bite can be red hot. We had fabulous fishing just a few days ago, then followed by days where boats struggled to get a few fish in the box. Switching up tactics in order to “dial in” on what the fish want seem to be key. Some days, clones did not work well, while natural colored cedar plugs put lots of fish in the boat. Many seasoned fisherman know that the later season tuna like a smaller presentation and sometimes don’t bite as well on the troll. Chumming the water with dead anchovies and using light gear to jig has been really productive . Silver irons, swim baits, or a dead anchovy on a small 3/0 hook can be deadly this time of year. If you want tuna, you have to work for them, and it can be hit or miss this time of year. Final word: Tuna fishing is unpredictable, but there’s lots of fish still out there.

Bottom Fish: Overall rock fishing is showing lots of improvement from the fair fishing conditions this summer. A nice variety of rock fish are showing up at the docks. Tiger rock, Vermilion, quill back, blue, black and yellow tail to name a few. The Ling Cod bite has been good to excellent most of the year. Many ling cod over 30 inches are fairly common and big boys over 40 inches are hitting the docks almost daily. Cabezon is closed. Halibut season is also over. Final word: Bottom fishing is good to excellent overall.

Salmon: Salmon fishing has been inconsistent, but there seems to be lots of fish out there. Perhaps they are spread out? The commercial fleet really nailed huge scores of Chinook a few weeks ago, with boats putting over 50 fish a day in their boxes. That ation has slowed down, but the non-selective Coho season just opened this weekend. Some boats found limits of fish early in the morning, while some struggled to get one fish all day long. Final word: Salmon fishing is poor to fair, with a few glimmers of greatness in between.

Crab: Phenomenal. That describes it best. Go get some!

The tuna fishing out of Depoe Bay and Newport was excellent today! Despite the slow days last weekend, we have some super conditions now. Boats with scores upwards of 50 fish today! We were fishing around 27 miles from Depoe Bay. Tons of fish jumping, and lots of fish in the kill box! Cedar plugs did extremely well and so did the light jigging gear. There’s beautiful warm blue water teeming with tuna out there, and we anticipate it to stick around for awhile. We look forward to more great fishing in the days to come. The report has been pretty consistent for the last few days. Overall Tuna Fishing Report: Excellent! It’s time to book a tuna trip if you have been wanting to get into some fish… before it’s too late.

As predicted, the bottom fishing is steadily getting better as Fall approaches. Not to say it’s been bad fishing this summer, but it has been a little on the slower side during the peak of summer. Many boats in recent days are reporting super catches of rock fish and Ling Cod. Limits of fish are more common and there has been a nice variety of fish including Tiger Rock fish, Vermillion and Quill Back rock fish. Tons of Black Rock Fish(sea bass) and Blues as usual. The crabbing continues to be dynamite as the average catch is around 5-7 crabs per person, and days where you get more are more frequent than days you get less. Don’t forget about our special 8hr Ling Cod trips starting October 1st. These are “real deep sea fishing” trips where we target big ling cod. You can expect to have an excellent chance at catching a world class fish on these trips. We saw many fish well over 40 inches in March, and we hope to see the same and/or bigger this October. Don’t hesitate to call Captian Perry for more details on these spectacular, and limited fishing trips.

One small sport boat reported 26 fish after losing nearly 15! Now this was the report just before the ocean turned nasty, so we’re not sure what’s going to happen this weekend. We can tell you where some of the hot action was… here’s the Lat./Long. 45.00 over 124.55 We will be on the water chasing tuna on Saturday. There’s plenty of season left, so we plan on running more trips before calling it quits. There’s definitely tuna out there. Let’s hope for a hot bite this weekend. See you on the water.
